Omega-3 is an important nutrient known as a type of ‘good’ fat. There are three main types of fatty acids that make up an Omega-3. They are alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).
ALA is found mainly in plant oils such as flaxseed, soybean, and canola oils. DHA and EPA are found mainly in fish and other seafood. ALA is considered the most important of these 3 fatty acids and is not made by the body naturally therfore it is necessary to get it through diet and/or supplementation.
Most common Omega-3 supplements come in the form of a ‘fish oil’ which can be unpleasant to consume due to a fishy smell and taste. This is also not the best way to get the recommended amount of the important ALA fatty acid.
For those not wanting to consume a ‘fish oil’ or if following a plant-based diet we recommend a vegan Omega-3 that will give you the necessary amount of this important nutrient without the fishy smell or taste.
Getting enough Omega-3 fatty acids is vital for optimal health. Benefits of this nutrient are plentiful and include improved cognitive function, better overall brain health, lower cholesterol, lower blood pressure, lowered risk for heart disease, improved ocular health, reduced inflammation, reduced liver fat, improved bone and joint health and its also very good for the skin.
